I have some good friends, Will and Pip, who use this quote from Wendell Berry as their email signature. Every time they email with news about the organic farm they work on, or singing protest on the London Underground, or their cycle-powered smoothie machine, or their open-home project, or the mushrooms they are growing on coffee grinds, I am inspired and then inspired even more when I scroll right through to the end!
You don’t have to have a life like theirs though, jam packed with eco projects. As Wendell reminds us here – it is even the small, every day acts of each family that will build and build and make a difference. Attending fracking protests and recycling effectively and lobbying our MP and deciding to eat less meat are all actions that can sit along side each other and every simple planet-saving job is to be celebrated.
“The real work of planet-saving will be small, humble, and humbling, and (insofar as it involves love), pleasing and rewarding. Its jobs will be too many to count, too many to report, too many to be publicly noticed or rewarded, too small to make anyone rich or famous” - Wendell Berry
